Evaluation question 3

Evaluation question 3

For my third evaluation question, I asked some peers to do some audience feedback on all three products. After watching the video and viewing the ancillary products, they were all asked some questions that helped me to establish what was a success and what was a failure within my work. The three people involved all fit into the audience demographic and the combination of genders mean they give a more representational opinion. Their answers help me to learn and establish what went well and what didn't.

From the audience feedback, I have learnt that my video has been effective in maintaining the Indie Rock genre as it's clear that from those that have watched it, they can easily identify the genre best suited. Furthermore, its clear that the links between the three products have been effective as an audience has clearly been able to make connections between them.

Despite some preferences to other genres of music, its pleasurable to see that the audience have enjoyed the work and would be happy to watch any further videos that I would potentially create. This therefore indicates that little is needed in the way of improvement.

However, there is always an inevitable amount of evidence needed. Mainly, I think if I were to improve my work, the audience feedback has taught me that it may be appropriate to include a larger selection of band shots, since the video revolves mainly around the lead singer and the narrative he's involved in. Even a couple of extra band shots could really allow the video to progress and become more attractive to an audience.

In terms of the ancillary products, I learnt from the audience that the products maintain a realistic look, which is a positive since I see success in creating a product that could be associated with a real band. The links between the products have been noticed, and I have learnt that in some ways the text font and close up shots of the mouths in colour have become a somewhat iconic look of the band identity.

Link to the focus group
The audience feedback is similar to that of the feedback received after the first focus group. The initial focus group highlighted that a garage was a suitable location and was well matched to the genre. The audience feedback here has highlighted that the video is appropriate to the indie rock genre. Therefore the focus group pre production proved to be an essential element of audience feedback since those participating were able to approve the location choice so that the production itself would be suitable and approved by those watching post production.

In addition to this, the focus group approved the narrative of the video, which has highlighted in this audience feedback was easy to follow and interpret. Therefore, by doing the focus group, it enabled the production to be easily understood by an audience since they agreed that the narrative suited the song itself and is an easy to follow concept.

Digipak planning

Digipak planning

Alongside the actual video and evaluation, the AS media course requires the creation of a digipak. Following the theme of Indie Rock, the digipak should follow the codes and conventions of the genre so that it matches themes featured within our video.

Elements of mise-en-scene that feature within the music video will follow through onto the digipak so that the two products match. For example, the theme of roses and fire will feature on both products so that the narrative of a breakup continues through. This creates a recognisable image for the band and for the song, similar to recognisable images other bands create e.g. The cartoon drawings on Gorillaz.

The first slide will likely contain the lead singer since he is the most relevant character within the video. Furthermore, the schemes of different colours for different band members will continue. As the slides continue, the three inside slides will show a medium shot of each band member. The slide that will appear at the back of the digipak will contain a full band shot, similar to those that features within the music video:

The colours will likely match the colour that features from their close up mouth shots:

Potentially, the digipak will be hand drawn, however it may be decided that photographs should be used instead so that they fit more with the theme of the video. Either way, the themes of fire and roses alongside the mise-en-scene of colours will be used to create repetition and continue the narrative, created in the music video, onto the digipak.

The use of font is essential in order to follow and suit the genre within the video. Block text will be used because it links to the text used at the introduction of the music video with the bands name and the song name. This font will follow through onto the digipak so as to once again create a link between the two products. Again, this will help create a pattern and contribute to the idea of a band identity.

The back panel will of course feature a list of the Bands other songs. All digipaks have this feature on. Since only one song was actually used, it's likely that the names of the other songs will just be created. However, the names may come from the names of the other songs from the same band that created 'Rise' (Saint Phnx)
