Music video- Filming day 3

Music video- Filming day 3

Filming for day three, if gone to plan, will be the final day of filming. The scenes filmed will include the scenes with the male protagonist singer and his girlfriend, for the narrative scenes. Close ups and medium shots will be used to capture the couple together and happy, then long shots will hopefully capture the couple falling apart. These scenes aid a narrative that is based around a couple breaking up. However, the polysemic nature of the song, allows for multiple interpretations.

Weather Forecast

Filming for day 3 is due to take place on Saturday the 9th December. Since filming will be done outdoors, its essential that the weather is clear and dry so as too not damage the camera or effect filming. So far, the weather looks clear and dry so should be perfect for filming.

Location

Alfreton park

The park within the location can hopefully help create some metaphors within the video. For example, parks link to the idea of childhood and fun, which links to the narrative within our music video because this setting implies that the relationship was fun and exciting. As the relationship crumbles within the video, the park could act as a symbol of the past and the memories that the two protagonists had together.

The shooting for day 3 will be done within Alfreton Park. Trees and benches present a potentially quiet and romantic setting that match the narrative that is based around a couple.
The location is easily accessible for all members of the group and the park is always open so filming can be done at any time of day.
The only issue that could occur is that there could be a large number of people within the park, potentially affecting filming. To solve this issue, a quiet location will be used within the park so that other people don't disturb our filming, and so we don't disturb their weekend walk.

Costume

Male protagonist
Black jeans will be worn to create continuity between his other costumes from other scenes. In addition to this, a red jacket will be worn. Red symbolises romance and love so should give a visual representation of his feelings towards the female in shot. Red is also opposite green on colour wheel. Since in scenes where he is alone, the male protagonist wears green, the opposing colour choice shows his feelings have changed, which hopefully symbolises to the audience that a breakup has occurred.

Female protagonist
Bright colours such as orange and blue will be worn by the female character. Reasons for this link to the idea that bright colours brings happiness and the female protagonist brought the male protagonist happiness when they were together. Bright colours hopefully will reflect the bright mood. These will contrast with scenes where the male character is alone feature dark colours. again, the contrast will show a change in mood and feelings of the male singer.
Below is a sketch of the costumes that will be worn:

Props

  • An old camera will be used to aid the narrative of romance between the two characters. The old camera will symbolise the idea that their love is of the past and that they need to move on, just as they need to move on with the camera:

Equipment

  • Tripod for the keeping filming steady. Reasons for using this particular Tripod can be justified based on the camera being easily attached and the extension ability. Having extendable legs means the filming can be done at a range of heights, which helps create another dimension within our music video since the shots can become varied.

  • Camera for filming. This Canon camera was chosen for filming because it provides a crisp, clear image as well as having a long battery life. Since filming can be time extensive, having a camera with a long battery life is helpful because it enables the camera to be in use all day. Therefore the battery needing charging doesn't become a distraction when filming.

  • Steady cam- to filming scenes that involve a 360 degree turn. This piece of equipment was chosen because the 360 degree turn will be used to represent a turn in the protagonists life. As the camera turns and becomes disoriented, as does his life. The steady cam allows us to film this scene in a steady fashion to maintain some balance. Furthermore, it allows for a smoother turn rather than a potentially jolty turn that would result from  using the camera alone.

Risk assessment

Filming for day 3 presents no risk whilst filming, so no risk assessment is required.

Music video- filming day 2

Music video- filming day 2

We plan to shoot on Sunday the 26th of November. Since the filming will be done outside, it's essential to ensure the weather is dry and clear so it doesn't affect the filming or the equipment that we are using. Filming in the afternoon is the perfect time to film because sunset is reasonably early (16:15). Since its been decided to film a fire, the background needs to be reasonably dark to enhance the fire itself. Therefore, a reasonably early sunset allows for this day to be perfect for filming a fire because the wait for sunset is short and allows the filming to be a smoother process.

List of people involved:

Luke Whittaker- Acting
Sarah Tennant- Camera and lights
 Hollie Wistow- Camera and lights

Props for the video:

  •  Printed Photos-
Photos of a female intended to be the protagonists girlfriend will be used. They will be used to burn either on the fire or with a match. To account for any mistakes that may be made whilst filming, several pictures have been printed so that the shot can be done several times if needed. The idea is that the pictures being burnt will represent a breakup or heartbreak on behalf of the protagonist.

  • Flowers
Flowers will be used because they represent romance and love. If the flowers are also burnt, then it should be another suggestion of a breakup or heartbreak.
  • Fire bin and burning material
A metal fire bin as well as some rubbish, such as cardboard, will be used to actually make the fire and allow the other props to be burnt.

Costumes:

The lead singer is the only actor who is being filmed on this day of shooting. To create continuity, the lead singer will wear similar costumes to those worn in the performance shoot. The Indie/rock genre allows for the protagonist to follow the conventions by simply wearing ripped jeans and a simple hoodie. The costume for this is just an outdoor version of his performance costume, since the tops are the same colour and the bottom half is the same.

Sketch of the costume:

Equipment

Camera used to film. This Canon camera was chosen for filming because it provides a crisp, clear image as well as having a long battery life. Since filming can be time extensive, having a camera with a long battery life is helpful because it enables the camera to be in use all day. Therefore the battery needing charging doesn't become a distraction when filming.

Tripod for maintaining stability within the film: Reasons for using this particular Tripod can be justified based on the camera being easily attached and the extension ability. Having extendable legs means the filming can be done at a range of heights, which helps create another dimension within our music video since the shots can become varied.

Location

  1. Back garden- Used for filming the fire. A back garden is a safe location to light a fire, plus it's legal to start one here. If any problems occur with the fire, resources are close by to solve the issue.

  1. Leys Wood- The wood will be used to film scenes that involve the protagonist running. Trees as a signifier have the signified connotation of being trapped and isolated. This therefore means the woods create a sense of loneliness for the signer which helps aid the narrative of feeing isolated post relationship. The woods are close to the back garden, so in terms of practicality, the two locations work well being filmed on the same date. These particular woods were used last year for our AS project, as a result the woods have become familiar to us and we're aware of the best times and best places within the woods to film in. In terms of other people, it's unlikely that many people will be in the woods and therefore this isn't a distraction to our filming.

Risk Assessment:

Hazards
  • The fire could burn and cause injury to the crew and actors. This is a moderate risk so to reduce the risk, water will be on site and the actors will keep a sensible distance from the flames. Furthermore, the fire will be kept relatively low if possible.
  • In the forest running scene, the risk of actors falling over and causing themselves injury is possible. This risk is moderate but the implications of the risk coming to reality are low. Even so, actions such as removing debris will be taken. This provides a clear path for the actor to run on to prevent falling. Furthermore, the actor will run at a moderate speed to reduce risk. Their run can then be sped up during the editing scenes.

Music video Day 1 filming

Performance plan:

Using the editing technique of cross cutting, both performance and narrative clips will feature within the video. As a group, the decision to film the performance sections first was made because it allows for reassurance that if any issues occur when filming the narrative, the performance videos can be used alone to still be able to make a successful music video.Preparing for the worst is essential.
  • The performance is set to be filmed on the 28th October
  • The performance is shot indoors so no weather forecast is required

Props

Using an indie/ rock genre of song, the aesthetic best suited requires having a band. To make the band look authentic, instruments will be needed. Borrowing guitars from family members and using other resources to access drums, the indie band look is emphasised within the performance.

Location:

For the performance location choice, a garage was chosen. Inspiration was taken from other music videos that we had watched as part of our research. Using a garage, the lighting can be controlled because of the absence of natural light. In addition, a range of shot angles can be used because the backdrop in a garage is bare. The minimal aesthetic to a garage adds to the indie/ rock look of the video. Planning to use a smoke machine to enhance the video and add another element, a grange provides the perfect environment because it's enclosed and smoke lingers as opposed to escaping through openings such as windows.

Costumes:

After analysing similar bands to the band our group planned to create, a trend of costume style was noticed. Looking at bands such as The Arctic Monkey's, a minimal yet edgy image is created. The image below shows a stereotypical Arctic Monkey's outfit:
To follow style of The Arctic Monkey's without taking their image, a similar but also relativity different choice of costume was decided for our band members. The image below shows a rough sketch of the costume choice for the Band:

For the males within the group, plain t-shirts were chosen with the intention of maintaining the minimal element of their image. Consistency of ripped jeans between the two male band members not only adds to their intended edgy look, but will also create a band identity. For the female member of the band a black dress with boots and a black leather jacket has been chosen for their costume. Black is a colour often associated with this genre of music and is also a minimal and edgy colour. All three band members should therefore match and have a band identity suitable to the genre of music.

Below shows pictures taken of the actual costume elements that will be worn by the band when performing:

Equipment:

  • Camera : Used to film. This Canon camera was chosen for filming because it provides a crisp, clear image as well as having a long battery life. Since filming can be time extensive, having a camera with a long battery life is helpful because it enables the camera to be in use all day. Therefore the battery needing charging doesn't become a distraction when filming.

  • Tripod: Used to stabilise the camera and prevent shaking. Reasons for using this particular Tripod can be justified based on the camera being easily attached and the extension ability. Having extendable legs means the filming can be done at a range of heights, which helps create another dimension within our music video since the shots can become varied.

  • Lights: Coloured lights adds a coloured glow to the footage. Having a glow to the music video helps to create not only an interesting element to the video, but also enables the video to gain a unique and recognisable look. If for example, the lights and colours were an element that was carried through to the digipak, then it would create an image recognisable with our band and chosen song.

  • Smoke machine: Use to create smoke and give a grunge image to the footage. This not only helps the video become more suited to the Indie Rock genre, but the smoke should also create a distorted image which can be seen as a metaphor for the narrative element of the video since the distortion has the connotation of the singers life becoming distorted since the end of his relationship.

Risk Assessment:

Hazards
  • The smoke machine could catch fire, potentially harming the crew. Despite being a low risk hazard, the smoke machine will be positioned on a concrete surface and not covered by any material in order to reduce the risk.
  • The smoke machine also has the potential to choke the crew within the garage. Again this is a low risk hazard but the doors will be opened at frequent intervals to help ventilate the room and the smoke machine won't be used extensively for long periods of time.

Audience Profiles

Audience Profiles

YouGov has a section on it's site labelled 'profiles' which is a section that provides information on the type of person who has interests in specific fields. By typing in, for example, a band name, YouGov will provide the stereotype of fans and provide background information on them such as gender, job type and age etc.

The only limitation of using YouGov is that the site only provides a certain amount of information before payment is required.

As part of creating our own music video, an image of our own band must also be created. By finding information on fans of bands similar to the band image we want to create, we can find information on who the average fan for our band would be and therefore can adapt the video to fit with the target audience. By creating an indie rock, band, bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Oasis and Imagine Dragons have been typed into YouGov to find information about their fans with the idea being the band we create will have similar fans.

YouGov Profile of Arctic Monkey fans

According to YouGov research the average fans of Arctic Monkeys are young males with careers in entertainment or sport. Perhaps including these elements within our music video will help to adapt the video to the intended audience.

Oasis

The results from YouGov suggests that the average fan for Oasis is somewhat similar to the fans of Arctic Monkeys. Both fans appear to generally be young males in the age category of 18-24.  A similar selection of jobs types also occurs between the two sets of fans. The fact the results are so similar implies that the target audience should be males around 18-24 years of age.

Imagine Dragons

According to YouGov results, the audience of Imagine Dragons is slightly different to those of the other bands because they're actually more likely to be female. However, the age category does appear to be the same.

The same age category between all 3 bands implies that if the band we create for our music video is intended to be a hybrid of the 3 bands selected, then the target audience of the video should be people around 18-24.  The fact the members of the band are going to be around 17 and 18 years old means the age of the band will be similar to the age of the suggested audience, which makes the band more relatable and more In tune.

Further research into the gender of fans of the chosen bands show that Oasis and Arctic Monkeys fans are actually only marginally more inclined to be male, with 53.9% of Arctic Monkey fans being male and 58.1% of Oasis fans being male. Close percentage between the genders in the fan base of these two bands and the slight margin of Imagine Dragons fans being female, indicates that the target audience for our band should not necessarily be gender specific. Potentially there should be a slight leaning towards a male fan base, but this leaning should not be too obvious for the reason that females also listen to similar music.

One way to address the target audience and satisfy male and female audiences is to include a band member of each gender so as too add positive and influential representations throughout. Having a female band member in a leading role such as the singer or guitarist means a female target audience should be satisfied with the representation of females in the music video. If the target audience is satisfied, the work will be more of a success.

Roar analysis

Roar analysis

Katy Perry's music video is based on the narrative of a plane crash that leaves her stranded in a jungle.

The concept of the video is to promote the artist and her new image. In the beginning of the video, the artist is portrayed as weak and feeble but as the song progresses, she becomes a woman who is brave and strong. The new album is intended to show how Katy Perry has changed from a young girl to a young, strong woman, and the music videos narrative reflects this.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is seen throughout the video. Even at the very beginning, an extreme long shot is used of a plane crash just as an extreme long shot is used in the first scene of the TV series "Lost".

Fans of Lost will recognise the intertextuality. The long shots also both include shots of a jungle setting, which means the similarity in mise-en-scene between the two only add to the intertextuality factor. The use of pastiche only fuels the narrative of the music video.

Intertextuality can be seen within certain films as well. The famous scene from Tarzan when he swings on a vine is replicated in Perry's video. Both Tarzan and Perry are positioned in the centre of the medium shot to highlight their importance and power. Potentially, this makes reference to Perry being as strong and comfortable in the wild as Tarzan is. Interpreting the narrative as being based on Perry's change into a strong woman, this scene where she appears like Tarzan only makes her appearance stronger.

Towards the start of the video, costumes are used to emphasis the fact that Perry and her boyfriend are explores. The stereotypical explorer costume is potentially a pastiche of Indiana Jones, who has a similar image.

The intertextuality between Indiana Jones and the video adds ideas to the narrative. The medium shots of the scenes from both media products present a classic explorer image and again implies Perry has changed. Potentially a metaphor of Perry exploring new music ideas is created from this.

As well as costume ideas, the video can also see intertextuality between the font choices. On posters for Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom and the beginning of the Roar music video use a similar font and colour scheme. Pleasure of recognition is provided for the audience as they see this text.

Main events of the plot

Despite the video lasting over 4 minutes, certain sections of the narrative can be identified to highlight the important and main events. The main events include:
  • Crashing

  • The boyfriend being killed by a tiger

  • Befriending the monkey

  • Getting washed by the elephant

  • The coronation

  • Swinging on a vine

All these key parts of the music video add to the narrative of the artist becoming stronger and more independent. The boyfriend being killed is probably showing how the artists doesn't need a man in her life to be successful. Befriending the various animals shows how Perry can adapt to any situation, again which is probably a metaphor of her adapting to her new album and new image.

Management of mise-en-scene

What with being filmed in California and there being a lack of real jungle, the setting for the music video was set up artificially to give a wild look to the location.
Potentially the most noticeable elements of mise-en-scene within the video come from having the animals in the video which were included in the video to add not only a creative element to the video but also to show how Perry made friends whilst in the wild.
Costume plays a big part of the mise-en-scene. Throughout the video, the artists appears to lose more clothes with each scene. It could be interpreted that the reason behind this is the fact that Perry is trying to show how she has become stronger. The lack of clothes shows how actually biologically and physically, the singer has become stronger as opposed to just metaphorically strong. Furthermore, a lack of clothes allows for male gaze to occur. Viewers may listen to the song and watch the video to admire Perry's image, resulting in Perry making more money from the increased views. If the costume from the beginning of the video is compared to the costume used at the end, the difference is extremely visible:

The two medium shots showing the costume illustrate how comfortable and confident in the new environment the artist has become.
In addition to costume, key elements from mise-en-scene such as lighting are used to add effect. As the video progresses, the light become brighter to show the change from a negative mood to a positive mood.

Message of the video

As aforementioned, the message of the video is all based on the idea that the image of Katy Perry has changed from a young, new singer to a more comfortable and confident artist. The whole video is seen as a metaphor for her transition into a new album. This links to star power because if the audience appreciate and admire her image, they are more encouraged to buy the music and male money for Katy Perry.

Link to Todorov's theory of equilibrium

Despite the start of the video begging with a disruption to equilibrium, the video certainly can been seen to follow Toddorov's theory. The following image shows how each stage of the theory fits to the narrative of the video:

Links to Propp's theory

Propp makes suggestions about the character types that feature in music videos. Looking at the video for Roar, the 7 character types can be seen within certain characters of the video:
  • The hero is the singer because she conquers and overcomes obstacles to gain the status of Queen of the jungle.
  • The villain is the tiger because the tiger is the main threat to the singers survival
  • The false hero is the boyfriend because at the start of the video the audience may expect him to save the singer but instead he gets killed and doesn't help at all.
  • The enabler could be seen to be the monkey because he helps enable the artist into conquering the jungle
  • The princess in some ways is actually the jungle because throughout the video the singer desires conquering it
  •  The dispatcher and helper are both the monkey because without the support of the monkey, Katy Perry probably wouldn't be able to survive.

Why was the video made

The video was made to help promote Katy Perry's new album. If the music video is enjoyable, audiences are more inclined to listen to and, consequently buy the album. As money is the only motive for people in the music industry, making the music video for Roar helps Perry and her team achieve their intention of making money. The music video along with album cover and album posters helps the industry make millions.

Link between the lyrics and the video

The links between the lyrics and the video are not too prominent within the video. The actual meaning behind the song is not based around the narrative of a jungle. However, the lyrics make constant reference to "The eye of the tiger", so by including a real life tiger within the music video, there's a clear link between the two. Constant close us of the tiger are used for symbolic reasons. Clearly there's a reason behind not linking the two that much, but the video would be improved if they linked better so that audiences don't have to work so hard trying to find an interpreted narrative.
